In
the 17th Century Livigno became legally and economically autonomous
awarded by the Graubündener ruler of Valtellina. In 1805, because of
its then hardly reachable location in winter, was declared a duty free
zone. The Austro-Hungarian Empire recognised this advantage in 1818.
Livigno's status was confirmed by Italy in 1910 and then by the
